Everything you need to know before your Perfect Day at the Poor Knights Islands.
Before Your Trip
Bring a towel, swimwear to wear under your wetsuit, warm layers for the boat ride out and back, a camera or GoPro (underwater housings are a great idea), and reef-safe sunscreen.
We provide everything else: wetsuits (one-piece 7mm with 3mm hooded vests), BCDs, regulators with dive computers, fins, masks, snorkel gear, tanks, and weight belts. Hot coffee, tea, soup, and chocolate are all included on board.
Tutukaka Marina is approximately 30 minutes from Whangarei and around 2.5 hours' drive from Auckland. Head north on SH1, take the Tutukaka turnoff near Whangarei, and follow the signs to the marina.
Free parking is available at the marina. Look for the world's largest scuba tank - you can't miss us! If you're coming from further afield, there are shuttle and bus options from Whangarei to the coast.
Certified divers (Open Water and above) can join our regular two-dive day trips. You'll need to show your certification card at check-in.
If you're not certified, our Discover Scuba Diving experience ($499) lets you try diving under the direct supervision of a PADI instructor - no prior experience needed. You'll receive a full briefing and training before your dive at the Poor Knights.
Not keen on going underwater? You're welcome to join as a snorkeller from $299 and explore the stunning surface waters, or come aboard as a Perfect Day Cruise passenger.
You must declare any heart or lung conditions, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, pregnancy, or any condition that may affect your safety in the water. You'll complete a medical questionnaire as part of the check-in process.
Some conditions may require a dive medical clearance from your doctor before you can participate. If in doubt, contact us before your trip so we can advise. We reserve the right to withdraw any participant on medical or safety grounds, with a full refund provided.
On the Day
Please arrive at Tutukaka Marina at 8:00 am. Check-in involves paperwork, gear allocation, and tank filling - so it's important not to be late.
We board at approximately 8:30 am and head out to the Poor Knights Islands or Twin Wrecks. After two dives, lunch, and an island tour, we return to the marina between 3:30 and 4:30 pm depending on conditions. You can complete your logbook back at the Dive Centre.
Our boats are fully equipped for a comfortable day on the water. A hot freshwater rinse is available on the dive deck, cabins for shelter and gear storage, and onboard toilet facilities. Hot coffee, tea, soup, and chocolate throughout the day.
We stock a full range of quality dive equipment, including Aqua Lung BCDs, regulators with Suunto dive computers, one-piece 7mm wetsuits with 3mm hooded vests, fins, masks and booties. Tanks are available in both DIN and yoke fittings.
Gear hire is included in our full-gear dive packages. If you're bringing your own equipment, let us know at check-in, and you can opt for a tank-only or no-gear rate to save.
