Striped boxfish sighted at the Poor Knights! Wow!
Mike Davis has been diving with us, and at the Poor Knights for years. He spotted a couple of box fish, and has positively identified them. Which is pretty exciting, as it is the first recorded sightting we have had out at the Islands.
Kate, I mentioned a pair of boxfish that I had not seen previously at the Knights. From reviewing Fishes of the GBR and Coral Sea by John Randall et al, I am pretty certain these were both females of the species, Ostracion solorensis, the “Striped boxfish”, which I have seen often in tropical Pacific waters.

Calling all photogs! We need a picture of this wee critter to confirm a positive ID.
CAN YOU HELP?

There have been a couple of sightings of exotic boxfish in the last decade, but still no photo to confirm their identity. There are a couple of similar ones, so we really do need a photo to be sure.
The striped boxfish (Ostracion solorensis) hasn’t been recorded upstream at Norfolk or Lord Howe Islands yet, though that doesn’t mean it doesn’t occur there.
But a NZ record will be quite a dramatic range extension, so that’s why we need a photo to be sure.
