Fifty scuba divers from Dive! Tutukaka armed with ironing boards, irons, and something to iron, descended to 29 metres to rise to an Australian challenge to break the world record for most people “Underwater Extreme Ironing”.
The site was beside the propeller of the purpose sunk Waikato wreck off Tutukaka’s coast in Northland, New Zealand, on a sandy bottom at a depth of 29 metres.
With the famous Poor Knights Islands on the not too distant horizon, four Dive! Tutukaka boats with the fifty extreme athletes aboard left Tutukaka Harbour to make ironing history.
Smooth conditions and 15 metre visibility meant the record was smashed using a new equation to measure the level of extremity. The equation was introduced to combat sneaky underarm bowling methods of ironing after the Australians had 43 ironers at a depth of only three metres.
The new equation records the number of divers multiplied by the depth at which they iron. 43 Australian ironers at 3 metres reached an extreme-o-meter reading of 129, whereas 50 Kiwi ironers at 29 metres achieved a remarkable extremity level of 1450!
Kate Malcolm, New Zealand Underwater Extreme Ironing Co-ordinator (NZUWEI), said “Our attempt was highly organised and the logistics were very finely tuned, our athletes are in their prime and the Waikato was a perfect site for this event.” She added, “We had three Australian scrutineers aboard to confirm the numbers and the depth, and we are certain that they picked up several pointers in their technique to take home to Australia. We look forward to the next challenge!”
The record has been successfully lodged with the Guinness Book of Records and the governing body of the sport in the United Kingdom.
