Dr Ingrid Visser was watching a blue whale and her calf feed on the same stuff as a giant manta ray this afternoon, with the first sighting of a manta ray this season..
Ingrid was called out this morning with a report of the blue whales about 10 am. She caught up with them and has been watching them feed on the surface with a giant manta ray as well.
We generally start seeing the manta around late December, and the water is hitting a nice 19 at the moment, so is certainly warming up.
20 plus metres visibility at sites,a nd the promise of great diving this year is on the cards.
Just off Little Barrier Island, and the three of them, and Ingrid, just hanging out together. Nice way to spend the afternoon if you ask me!!

Chad, June 2009Just a quick note to say thanks again for the GREAT day of diving off Poor Knights! I can see why that area was so highly rated by Jacque. It was so great to get back in the water after 4 years. Your professional service and attention to details were the best I have seen since I have been diving. The background on the islands and the plant and animal life was also a nice twist.
Thanks especially to Hemi for running over the basic dive drills and making me feel safe and confident back in the water.
If I ever make it back to NZ, I will definitely come out again. I will also let any diving buddies heading that way to look you guys up.
