Earthrace visits the Poor Knights Islands

You would have been forgiven for thinking that a prehistoric creature had just emerged from Rikoriko Cave yesterday, as the coolest boat in the world, Earthrace, anchored in Maroro Bay while her crew dived the blue waters of the Poor Knights Islands.

In June 2008, the amazing Earthrace vessel set a new world record for a powerboat to circle the globe, and she did this with 100% renewable biodiesel fuel, and a net zero carbon footprint.

The voyage was over 24,000 nautical miles, and took 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes, smashing the old record by over two weeks.

Her crew came and dived with us, and were incredibly impressed with the 25-30 metre blue visibility in Maroro Bay.

We took the school council out from Ngunguru School, a neat bunch of youngsters, who got to ride into the World’s Largest Sea Cave on board Earthrace. This boat is really breath taking to look at, but the stereo system is mind blowing!! We had our very own Cave Concert!

Pete Bethane gave an really informative talk in the evening with about 40 people there, an inspirational speaker, he regaled us with tales of passion, determination, and a strong message of environmental impacts.

As crazy as the boat is, and as amazing as his race around the world was, his message is certainly one that rings true with us. The need to change our ways, and to make an effort, to create a level of awareness about all things environmental, and ecological, before it is too late.
