Dr Ingrid Visser was watching a blue whale and her calf feed on the same stuff as a giant manta ray this afternoon, with the first sighting of a manta ray this season..
Something fishy is going on at the Poor Knights, where weirdos continue to turn up.
Luke snapped a pretty good shot of this wierd and wonderful critter, and with the help of Wade and Steve O'Shea, an identification has been made. A kind of cuttle fish, and the only known Tremoctopus species in NZ.
These guys just seem like they are floating!

The identification of this fish stumped a few experts for a while, but has been positively identified as the larval form of a fish that lives on the bottom, 1000 - 5000m deep!
Just weeks ago the Tutukaka coast was named one of the top three coastlines in the world and on Saturday one of the reasons why was on full display less than 1km from shore - three massive blue whales enjoying a cruise north.
Dolphins, whales, calm seas, sunshine, cicadas, salty skin, good friends, great company, lots of laughter, makes you feel GOOOOOD!

An orca makes the most of the good waves at Sandy Bay. The Tutukaka Coast is really hitting the headlines lately, with a National Geographic Traveler accolade as one of the best coastlines in the world, and this pod of orca reckon it is pretty good as a surf spot too!!
