the guys at Dive!Tutukaka were so nice and although I was alone, they made me feel immediately comfortable. it was forecasted to rain all day and was already raining at a considerable force, so I was a tad bit bummed. my mood brightened though when I learned we were taking a nice big boat with a covered deck. sweet.
A few weeks ago I had a friends sister come to stay on her round the world trip. She was keen to go diving in the Poor Knights marine reserve which is a few hours drive up north and was listed by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world.
Ladies, gentlemen and Kiwis of all ages. With the assistance of New Zealand native son Craig Martin, author of the Travelling Europe ebook, I present to you the Seven Wonders of New Zealand!
When I was in Fiji I met an English girl who told me that this dive is a MUST if I visit New Zealand’s north island. Jacques Cousteau wrote that this island made his list of top ten dive sites in the world, with that reputation I wasn’t going to let the chance pass.
At the dive shop bright and early, well early anyway. Was pleased to be issued with a decent wetsuit, as the water temperature was 15° (but pretty soon decided that I wished I'd brought my dry suit).
Once we arrived it was time for the neoprene. I was very glad I paid the extra money to take the refresher course. I had a one on one chance to test my memory and refresh my skills, including everything from putting my gear together to going through an “out of air” experience underwater.
Pacific Rendezvous is one of Northland's most beloved resorts - and most spectacularly situated, sitting high on a peninsula overlooking Tutukaka Harbour and the Poor Knights and offering breathtaking 360-degree views.
Over lunch we motored into the largest sea cave in the world and then passed through a couple of enormous limestone rock arches, all of which were very impressive.

Although the staff and crew are not Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) certified it did not take long before they had won my confidence.

Al Betteridge PADI MSDT 111529Many, many, many thanks to you great people, especially Craig, for looking after Anna De Courcey this morning on her dive experience!! She had an absolute ball by her phone call with me, and was singing the praises of Craig over and over. That bloke needs a raise or some other recognition. Anna saw some very cool things, and was reassured by Craigs’ expertise and calm patience. Thank you again. Yours in diver education and marine conservation.
