New Zealand is surrounded by ocean - our oceans are a national treasure for many reasons, but we have begun to see a national decline in many of our fish species. It is only recently that we have begun to understand the impacts this has on the rest of our marine environment. Only by working together as a nation towards understanding more about our marine environment can we minimise our impacts upon it and conserve what we have for future generations.

The PADI Green Star is about rewarding passion, vision, excellence, and the pursuit of Conservation.

A first for New Zealand, and entirely appropriate that it should go to a group of people passionate about an iconic destination in NZ, the Poor Knights Islands.

Working daily in a pristine marine environment requires high standards that Qualmark have recognised for a long time with Dive! Tutukaka receiving one of the inaugural Enviro-Gold ratings. History repeats with another NZ inaugural environmental award going to the passionate group of divers based in this small coastal village.

A funny ol’ pattern at the moment, but not one that will stop us from diving. The water is warming up to 19 degrees and the visibility is 15-20 metres.
We have a NNW flow - at 20-25 knots on Saturday that drops to 15-20 SW on Sunday.
A funny front overnight leaves us with an easterly on Monday of 20 knots that moves into a 15 knots east flow for the rest of the week.
Scattered showers on Saturday depart completely and leave the next week rain free as well!
A ground swell of a metre picks up to 2 on Sunday for a time before dropping back to one metre from the southeast.
All in all, patchy weekend, and a great looking next week.
We’re diving!

New Zealand is a magical place, especially for dive trips. During a recent travel assignment, ace underwater photographer Berkley White and Sport Diver Editor Eric Michael spent a week with the amazing crew from Dive Tutukaka exploring Poor Knights Islands.

This string of islands off the northeast coast has been described by Jacques-Yves Cousteau as one of the planet’s 10 best dive sites.

Besides heaps of amazing critters, incredible underwater topography, spectacular topside scenery and cool locals, Eric discovered an intense personal connection to a place halfway around the globe (read about it in the Nov/Dec 2011 issue).

Meanwhile, check this photo gallery for exclusive details from Eric about his exciting dive trip.

Sport Diver Most excellent.

Short and sweet forecast!
Southwest 10 knots for Friday, for Saturday and for Sunday!!!!

Northeast swell of half a metre on Saturday. Southeast one metre developing on Sunday, easing half a metre Monday.

I know the rugby is on, but that is a bloody good dive forecast!

15 degrees, a bit patchy with the vis at the moment, but still some great 20 plus metres sites around if you know where to go!
